Before the Bay Wakes

There is an hour on the south coast of Martinique when an anchorage still feels entirely its own. The water has not yet been disturbed by tenders. The beach is quiet. Even the sound of the chain settling on the seabed seems unusually clear. We tend to arrive before that silence disappears.

Across the Saint Lucia Channel

Martinique does not disappear all at once. It becomes a line behind the stern, then a colour, then nothing. Ahead, Saint Lucia takes its time. On a clear passage the Pitons appear long before the details of the coast, two dark shapes rising out of an otherwise uninterrupted horizon.

Dinner After the Wind Drops

Dinner rarely begins when the table is ready. It begins when the anchorage changes. The last tender has crossed the bay, the wind has softened and the cockpit has become quieter than any dining room ashore. Only then does the evening find its true rhythm.

South of Saint Vincent

Beyond Saint Vincent, distance begins to feel different. Islands appear, vanish and reappear off the beam. Some deserve a night. Others only a long lunch at anchor. There is no reason to decide too early.

When the Engines Go Quiet

The difference is immediate. First the vibration disappears. Then conversation becomes easier. Water moves along the hulls, the rig begins to speak, and the yacht finds its own pace. Sailing well is not about adding something to the day. It is about removing almost everything unnecessary.

The Luxury of Changing Course

A private day at sea should not feel like an itinerary printed the night before. Sometimes the best decision is made after lunch: stay where you are, cross the bay, follow the wind, or simply do nothing for another hour.
